One of the classic images of bioluminescence (light produced by a chemical reaction that originates in an organism) is that of an anglerfish, dangling its glowing lure. However, of all the luminous organisms in the sea, only a few are thought to use light in this way. Fewer still have been known to make red light. Recently, a siphonophore, specifically an angler jellyfish (Fig. 1), has been discovered which seems to do both: it uses small red lures to attract prey.
